How big is a jigsaw puzzle? It's a bit like asking how long a piece of string is - there's no single answer. But piece count is a pretty handy shortcut for guessing how big the finished thing will be. So whether you're checking if a puzzle will fit on your coffee table, or buying one for a friend and wondering if it'll swallow their entire dining room table, we've got you covered. In this article, we'll walk through how big jigsaws are by piece count, how much table space you'll need to finish them, and roughly how long they'll take.

How big is a 500-piece puzzle?

500-piece puzzles hit the sweet spot. They’re challenging enough to keep you engaged, but won’t require more than a couple of afternoons to complete.

They also won’t take over your space. At roughly 19” x 14”, a 500-piece puzzle fits comfortably on a standard coffee table, with room to spare for your coffee mug too.

How big is a 1000 piece puzzle?

Moving to 1,000 pieces, we start to enter serious puzzle territory. Expect to spend 10-15 hours on one of these - it's more of a project for several evenings than a one-sitting job.

A 1,000-piece puzzle typically measures 27.6” x 19.7” - if you pick a panoramic style jigsaw, like this Stranger Things one, those dimensions shift to a wider 38.5” x 14.8”.

This size jigsaw will fit easily on a dining table - though if you'd rather not have that table out of action for several days, you could pick up one of our puzzle storage solutions, like the Puzzle Store & Go. Not only does this let you put your puzzle away after each session, it also has five integrated trays so you can sort your puzzle pieces out first.

How big is a 1500-piece puzzle?

Next up, we have 1,500-piece puzzles - you're looking at around 12–25 hours to complete, depending on your experience and the complexity of the image. (You can find out more about puzzle difficulty here.)

All those extra pieces mean you'll need extra space to work in. The puzzle itself will fit on most dining tables - it comes in at 31.5” x 23.6” - but you'll need extra room to spread out and sort your pieces as you go. For something this size, puzzle sorting trays can be a big help in keeping everything organized.

How big is a 2000 piece puzzle?

Then there’s 2,000 piece puzzles. At this size, you're looking at 15–30 hours of puzzling, spread out over a couple of weeks, unless you're a real enthusiast who likes long, focused stretches. Either way, when you complete one, it’s a serious achievement.

A 2,000-piece puzzle generally measures 38.6” x 29.5”, so you'll need a big dining table to take this one on. And if your table isn’t big enough, you might have to move to the floor.

How big do puzzles get?

Puzzles get much bigger than 2,000 pieces. Ravensburger has a whole category with 7,000 pieces and more, including an epic 18,000-piece Star Wars puzzle that measures almost 110 inches or just over 9 foot wide -  roughly the same length as NASA's Curiosity Rover. At that size, a dining table simply won't cut it.

Then there's Ravensburger's biggest puzzles of all: the Disney Memorable Moments and Pokémon Celebration Journey puzzles, both coming in at an enormous 40,320 pieces. Once completed, these puzzles measure 22 feet wide - roughly the length of two Chevrolet Sparks parked end to end.

But the biggest puzzle in the world is much, much larger than that. Containing a staggering 551,232 pieces, it was assembled by 1,600 students from the University of Economics in Ho Chi Minh City. It measured in at 76 feet by 48 feet, about the length of a blue whale or a semi-truck, and had to be assembled in a stadium. It’s held the Guinness World Record for the largest jigsaw puzzle ever made since 2011.

Going vertical: how big are 3D puzzles?

3D puzzles build up instead of out. They come in all sorts of forms, from cars to famous landmarks like our Empire State Building puzzle that reaches 19” tall and the Eiffel Tower puzzle coming in at 18”.

If you're short on table space, 3D puzzles are a great option - they're still challenging to put together, but take up a fraction of the space compared to 2D. And once finished, they don't need to be packed away, they just double up as a nice piece of decor. Explore our full range of 3D puzzles here.
